The story behind the story
“I’m your owl friend, coming out of the dark.” A young boy’s secret friendship with a large owl who visits him by night, as told by the owl: “You are not afraid of my whoo-oo-oo, or my big round eyes, or the discs of gray feather that surround them… While I cry whooo-oo-oo, you, underneath me, are running with your arms spread out, crying aiee-aieee-aieee. Running and flying, we speed through the night.” I love this book. My late father, who believed the owl represented the muse, loved it too.
