Will It Be Okay?

The story behind the story

Oh, how I wish this one were back in print. I get emails all the time begging me for it. It’s just a question-and-answer, back-and-forth, between a mother and daughter. “Will it be okay?” “Yes, it will.” “But what if…” The little girl’s ifs range from silly (“But what if there is snow, lots and lots of snow?”) to somber (“But what if you die?”) and the mother’s responses range from practical, to dreamy, to spiritual, but always reassuring and truthful. I’m so proud to have written this.

Still okay after 13 years! August 27, 2002

This was my daughter’s favorite book when she was 7 years old. She liked it so much that I ordered it for her from the publisher. It was very reassuring to her to know that “it would be okay.” Now, she’s almost 20 and she still cherishes this book. When things are going rough, I remind her of
Ms. Dragonwagon’s wisdom,”It will be okay.”

THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD June 28, 1999

Format:Library Binding

I first read this when I was in college, working in the children’s area of a library about 15 years ago. It impressed me so much that I wrote down all the words! (It is a short book, almost a poem.) This is the conversation of what appears to be a young girl and her mother. The girl asks, “Will it be okay?” and the mother says it will. Then there is a series of “But what if …?” from the daughter, with the mother answering with “If that happens, you’ll handle it this way” answers that can’t help but increase the daughter’s self-confidence. Even though it appears to be a children’s book, adults (especially worriers like me) will find that it provides a good way of looking at the world. It’s great!

Deeply Moving Book November 8, 2012
By Hope Whitney
Format:Library Binding

This book helps address children’s fears. It could also help a child talk about the death of a loved one. “But what if you die?” asks the child in the book at the end. “My love doesn’t die, it stays with you, as warm as two pairs of mittens on top of each other. When you remember you and me, you say: ‘What can I do with so much love?'”So you love thunder and lightning, dogs and snakes. You dance with other people in the leaves, and are in plays with them. You love them, and they love you, and you eat raisins together.”

“So will it be okay?”

“Yes, my love, it will.”

NOT A LITTLE MONKEY, by Charlotte Zolotow, illustrted by Michelle Chessaree

"So, the little girl climbed into the big waste-basket and waited." ' Oh no,' said her mother, ' we don't want to throw you away.'"There are many ways to express love and the need for attention. Here, a busy mother and her just-a-bit naughty little girl tease each other affectionately — the little girl making her point without even uttering a word. That's today's story time — read aloud by the author's daughter at Crescent Dragonwagon's Writing, Cooking, & Workshops, with Mark Graff's "text support" and discussion."Just right for two-to-fours, the humor of this true-to-life story of a mischievous little girl who blocks her mother's attempts to clean house will elicit giggles from the lollipop set."
